Big Meadow in the western part of Virginia, holds the record for the highest snowfall amount in 24 hours - a whopping 33". It also has the distinction of having the highest monthly total in January of 1966 of 53". Normally, these amounts are found in places next to large bodies of water where "lake effect snow" smothers the landscape. Big Meadow is located near Dark Hollow Falls, a wonderful hike and a beautiful spot for a picnic, preferably in early summer.
