The Royal Maze at Williamsburg behind the Royal Palace is one of the more popular things to do when touring this Colonial treasure. The maze was actually only built in 1933 however. Similar in popularity to back yard pools today, mazes were the rage among large landowners in the 18th centuries as a source of entertainment and status. So, while not 100% certain, archaeologists believe there was probably a maze in this location. The current maze was modeled after a maze at Hampton Court in Middlesex, England. Rumor has it that you can quickly navigate the maze if you keep your left hand on the left wall all the way to the center. Next time you visit, give that a go and see if you can amaze your family and friends!
