In the last census, the breakdown of population based on race was as follows (the figures in parenthesis are the national averages): White only: 63.6% (62.6%); Black: 19.7% (13.2%); American Indian or Native Alaska: .5% (1.2%); Asian: 6.1% (5.3%); Hispanic or Latino: 8.6% (17.1%); and 2 or more races: 2.7% (2.4%). The next census is in 2020, and experts estimate a large increase in the 2 or more races as "the U.S. will become a plurality nation, where the non-Hispanic white population remains the largest single group, but no group is in the majority."
