Virginia has been the birthplace of 5 presidents, but of some notable writers as well. Legal Fiction writer David Baldacci was born in Richmond and lives in the western part of the state. Earl Hamner of "The Waltons" fame was born in Shuyler in 1923. Tom Wolf, author of "Bonfire of the Vanities" and "The Right Stuff" was born in Richmond in 1931. Numerous Pulitzer Prize winners have also hailed from Virginia and include: Russell Baker, William Cabell Bruce, Willa Cather, Virginius Dabney, Douglas Southall Freeman, Ellen Glasgow, David J. Mays, and William Styron.
