"Chessie" the black bear, carved from wood, stands on its hind legs to greet visitors as they enter the Dismal Swamp Canal Trail, an 8.5-mile biking and hiking path created from retired highway Route 17 that runs alongside the Dismal Swamp Canal. This multipurpose-linear and flat nature trail threads through some of the most uniquely historical and ecologically-significant habitats in the United States. Snakes, turtles, frogs, lizards and salamanders abound, and easily seen squirrels roam around with raccoons, beaver, river otter, bear, dear and even bobcats! Rangers ask that you not feed Chessie as she may want to go home with you!
