An Exasperated Colonial Drill Sergeant

How did Front Royal, Virginia get its name? According to legend, it was originally known as Hell Town during its wild frontier days, but was unintentionally renamed by an exasperated Colonial drill sergeant. His repeated orders for his troops to "Front the royal oak" (oaks were considered the royal tree of England) in the center of town was often ignored, so his cry was often repeated. This struck some local's as "endearing", so the name stuck.
