"The ideal attitude is to be physically loose and mentally tight" Arthur Ashe

The French Open begins today, and Virginia has a by-gone connection. In 1971, Richmonder Aurthur Ashe won the French Open Men's Doubles title with partner Marti Riessen, beating Americans Tom Gorman and Stan Smith in 5 set match that was finally settled in the 20th game of the 5th set (11 - 9). Ashe would go on to beat Riessen for the title in another tournament that same year, again on a clay court in France.
