For when you have absolutely nothing to do, Smithfield has the "cure."
Thanks to a 24/7 webcam, you can keep a sharp eye on P.D. Gwaltney Jr.'s famous "pet ham," hung in 1902 and forgotten for 20 years before becoming an icon of Smithfield's curing history.
The Isle of Wight County Museum's "ham cam" gets around 300 viewing sessons a month, mostly from the U.S., though viewers in China, Spain and the UK are noteworthy. They read about the ham in travel books and just have to see it from the comfort of their kitchen tables, while noshing on bacon.
Have you watch the "ham cam?" You should, for as they say, "Everyone's a bit of a ham."
